2048

Also called the number merge or sliding tile puzzle — equal numbers merge: 2 + 2 = 4, and on until the 2048 tile.

The classic sliding-tile puzzle, free in your browser: swipe to slide, merge equal numbers, reach 2048. Our twist is fairness you can verify — every game is dealt from a public seed, and the daily board gives the whole world the same starting tiles and the same tile sequence. Your result is all skill.

How to play 2048 — the rules

  1. Swipe — or use the arrow keys — to slide all tiles in one direction at once.
  2. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into their sum. Each tile merges at most once per move.
  3. After every move a new 2 (or occasionally a 4) appears on a free square.
  4. Reach the 2048 tile to win — then keep going for 4096 and beyond.
  5. The game ends when the board is full and no neighbouring tiles match. Keep your biggest tile in a corner and build a chain toward it.

Keyboard: arrow keys to move, U to undo (one step — can be turned off in the settings).

Fair randomness, provably: every game is dealt from a public seed. The daily board uses the same seed for everyone — identical starting tiles and identical tile sequence worldwide — so your result depends on your moves, never on a lucky spawn.

Frequently asked questions

Is the daily 2048 board the same for everyone?

Yes — and more than the starting position: the seed fixes the entire tile sequence. Two players making the same moves see exactly the same tiles appear in the same places. The daily switches over at midnight in your local time zone; reach the 2048 tile to keep your streak.

Is the randomness in 2048 fair?

Here, provably so. Tiles are drawn from a deterministic random sequence fixed by a public seed — nothing adapts to your play, nothing nudges the odds. New tiles are a 2 nine times out of ten and a 4 once, exactly as in the original rules.

What is the best 2048 strategy?

Keep your biggest tile locked in a corner and build a descending chain along one edge. Avoid the one direction that would pull your corner tile away, and merge small tiles early so the board never clogs. Patience beats speed — one careless swipe can undo fifty good ones (that is what the single undo is for).

Can I undo a move in 2048?

One step, once — the undo button takes back your last move, and is available again after your next move. It is on by default and can be turned off in the settings if you prefer the pure game.
