How to play Mahjong Solitaire — the rules
- Goal: remove all 144 tiles by taking them in matching pairs. Clear the whole turtle to win.
- A tile is free when nothing covers it from above and its left or right long edge is open. Only free tiles can be taken.
- Tap a free tile to pick it up, then tap a matching free tile to remove the pair. Tap the same tile again to put it back.
- Most tiles match only their exact twin — but any flower matches any other flower, and any season matches any other season (all four flower tiles show the same blossom, and all four season tiles the same moon).
- No pairs left to take? Undo is unlimited — step back as far as you like. Every board has a winning line, so a different order can still clear it.
Keyboard: arrow keys move between free tiles, Enter picks up and confirms a match, Esc deselects. Press H for a hint and U to undo.

Is every Mahjong Solitaire board winnable?
Every board we deal has a winning line — it is built backwards from a solved turtle and an independent solver confirms it can be cleared, so a full solution always exists. But mahjong solitaire is not win-no-matter-what: the order you take tiles in can leave you with no matching free pair. That is why we never claim you cannot lose, and instead give you unlimited undo to back out of a dead end.
What makes a tile free in Mahjong Solitaire?
A tile is free when no tile covers any part of it from above, and at least one long side — its left or its right edge — is completely open. Free tiles are shown in full contrast while blocked tiles are dimmed, and you can only take a pair when both tiles are free.
How do flowers and seasons match?
The four flowers all match each other, and the four seasons all match each other — you do not need the identical tile. All four flower tiles carry the same blossom and all four season tiles the same moon, so the partner is obvious at a glance, and the two groups are told apart by shape — blossom against moon — not by colour.
What happens when I run out of moves?
A banner tells you there are no free pairs left, and undo steps you back — there is no reshuffle. We deliberately never reshuffle, because shuffling the remaining tiles would break the promise that this exact board has a real, verified winning line. Undo as far back as you need and try a different order.
Is the daily Mahjong board the same for everyone?
Yes. Each day one 144-tile board is generated from a public seed, and everyone in the world gets exactly the same turtle, switching over at midnight in your local time zone. Finish it to keep your streak going — the share text gives away only your time and streak, never the layout.
